Geotechnical problems of shifting of the gothic church in Most

The medieval city of Most was built on a vast coal deposit that lay near the ground surface. Czechoslovak government decided in 1970 to exploit the coal by open pit mine and raze down the old city. Shifting to a new place saved the Gothic cathedral of immense historical and cultural value from destruction. Interesting geotechnical problems had to be solved during execution of the project.
