The functions and interactions between the rotary disc filter and the filter fabric are described and analysed. Special attention is given to the critical areas of cake formation and cake release. The difference in construction and behaviour of state-of-the-art multifilament and new monofilament fabrics are explained and analysed. Results of field tests are presented and explained. It is demonstrated that the target of a substantial reduction in dewatering costs per tonne of mineral can be achieved by simply using the new, advanced filter materials. The potential for future development is briefly discussed.
