As a first step to sizing the defect in pipes, FEM simulation of the circumferential wave propagation was performed on pipes with axial slot. Oblique wave was transmitted and received at angle 70 degrees to the normal on the diametrical opposite side of the slot. Received waveform by simulation is in good agreement with experiment on the arrival time and duration of main shear wave. The peak amplitude of the received shear wave drops for deeper slot, the duration of the shear wave is also dependent on the slot depth. In future, we should extract the formula for the slot size from the received waveforms. In addition, the optimum configuration of the transducer for sizing defect should be determined.
