A portable single-side NMR magnet has been successfully designed and constructed using a field modeling technique and a rare earth magnetic alloy. The magnet was characterized and tested on latex and carbon/epoxy; the field was of sufficient strength and homogeneity to detect spin echoes from both materials and to measure both T_1 and T_2. More work is needed to compare the sinle-side magnet data with data obtained from a laboratory NMR magnet.
