During the operation of the LITE experiment correlative lidar measurements were performed at many places. DLR, Institute of Atmospheric Physics provided the airborne Backscatter LIDAR ALEX on board the research aircraft Falcon 20, operating at the three wavelengths 1064, 532 and 355 nm. The shuttle LIDAR profiles show for all flights surprisingly good agreement with those measured by the airborne system even on very fine details of inhomogeneous cirrus clouds. In addition the measurements show the stronger effect of multiple scattering on the Shuttle data due to the large scattering volume as a consequence of the long distance between orbiting system and target.
