Carbofuran, a widely used pesticide, has been characterized as an inter fering agent to fish repreocution by reducing the serum vitellogenin and estogen level in vivo, The exat route of action of the pesticide has not yet been assessed. The present experiments were designed using immature carps, Labeo rohita (Ham). to see the extent of damage induced by carbofuran in the vitellogenin producing syste of this fish and whether the treatment of estrogen could recover the serum vitellogenin level. Low levels of serum vitel-logenin and estogen were produced inLabeo rohita ofter immersion in 0.5mg/L carbofuran for 14 days in comparison to that of the controls. Single injection of e-strogen (1mug/g) was able to enhance serum vitellogenin level in fish maintained in tap-water but not in carbo-furan. These findings implicated that carbofuran at sublethal concentrations alleted vitellogenin synthesizing system in carp.
