Symposium on Management and Conservation of Aquatic Biodiversity

摘要

Rational management and conservation of biodiversity is fundamental to the success of sustainable human development, Since the entry into force of the Convention on Biological Diversity on 29 December 1993, new international mechanisms are being established to explore options to promote sustainable management and rational utilization of biological resources of the planet. New coalitions of national, international, and non-governmental organizations are being formed to objectively analyze the critical issues and opportunities, to mobilize local expertise, and to prepare plans of action. Several major reviews on the world situation ahve emerged during the past few years. The focus of dialogue, however, has been mostly on terrestrial biodiversity. The concepts and principles are farless appreciated for the aquatic realm than for the land. This situation is mainly due to the lcak of an organized knowledge base on aquatic biodiversity and the processes that impinge of them.
