The problem of how best to exploit a reserve has vexed mine planners and design engineers ince mining began. The cyclic nature of the mine design-scheduling problem, combined with the lack of good mathematical toosl for tackling it, have ensured that it has been, and will continue to be, a major challenge for operations researchers working in mining.
