1382362 Extrudable polymer composition containing fibres HASBRO INDUSTRIES Inc 14 July 1972 [16 July 1971] 33102/72 Headings C3P and C3F [Also in Division B6] An extrudable composition for making pencil sheaths comprises, by weight, 30-89À5% of a thermoplastic resin binder, at least 10 but less than 49À75% of fibrous filler particles comprising cellulose and/or leather particles and 0À5-15% of a soap of a metal other than sodium or potassium, the amount of binder being greater than the amount of fibrous filler. Examples of the thermoplastic resin binder are styrene/ acrylonitrile copolymer, ABS resin, high impact polystyrene a cellulose ester resin, ethyl cellulose a homo- or copolymeric vinyl resin (other than those specified) and mixtures thereof. The cellulosic filler may be any wood flour although other substances such as cotton linters, hammermilled rayon and cotton flock may be used. The leather is preferably micronized. Metal soaps specified are the stearates, oleates, palmitates, ricinoleates and laurates of Ca, Al, Mg, Zn and Li; aluminium stearate is preferred. The composition may also contain 0À3-2 wt. per cent of moisture, which gives the pencil sheath a fine porous structure on moulding. Other ingredients such as dyes or pigments, and scenting agents may also be present. In the examples, an ABS resin and a high impact polystyrene are mixed with wood flour and aluminium stearate, and the composition formed into pencils by extrusion moulding around a marking core.
