The characteristics of premixed flames in a counterflow are numerically studied adopting a detailed kinetic mechanism with an emphasis on the effect of gas-phase radiation and flame interaction on the flame structure and NO_x and CO emission characteristics. For a lean CH_4/air mixture, a higher CO and a lower NO_x emissions are predicted as strain rate increases. Gas radiation affects the flame through the reduction in flame temperature coupled with strain rates. For small strain rates, a significant reduction in the peak temperatures is observed when considering the gas-phase radiation.
