The history of commercial light-water reactor plants in Japan dates from the early 1970's. Slide 1 shows the light-water reactor plants commissioned in the 1970's. Of these light-water reactors, the BWRs were introduced from General Electric in the United States, while the PWRs were introduced from Westinghouse. Japanese governmental authorities, electric power companies, and nuclear reactor manufacturers (Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Toshiba, and Hitachi) had to focus their efforts on acquiring nuclear power generation technology, as well as on trouble-shooting, at the initial stage of technology introduction. In the field of radwaste treatment facilities, as with the case of the nuclear reactors, the US design philosophy was introduced in its then existing form, which was not necessarily suited to the geographical restrictions and regulatory requirements of Japan. By that time, JGC had accumulated technical know-how in chemical process design through the company's extensive experience in the design and construction of oil refining plants and petrochemical plants.
