EXPERIMENTAT AND NUMERICAL STUDIES ON THE EFFECT OF THE NEW SEISMIC RETROFIT USING THE MOVEMENT RESTRAINING DEVICES INTRODYCED TO THE CONSTRUCTION JOINT OF PLAIN CONCRETE PIERS
Plain concrete piers commonly used as supports for railway structures are relatively vulnerable againstearthquakes. There are many examples of horizontal through-cracking, displacement along constructionjoints between upper and lower pier sections as well as spalling of concrete below the construction joint. In this paper, the authors proposed a new seismic retrofitting method based on a movement restrainingdevice for construction joints to increase the safety of evacuation routes and improve reparability. andthe effect of newly introduced movement restraining device was verified by shaking table experimentsand numerical analyses. A series of shaking table tests clearly show that the displacement along theconstruction joints of the pier was limited by newly introduced movement restraining device and thenumerical simulations by Numerical Manifold Method can successfully reproduce the results obtainedfrom shaking table tests. Test installations of the movement restraining device was also performed onthe actual concrete pier of bridge without any difficulties during placement.
