The process of electrocoating a conductive ware package or part requires that DC current travel between the part and an oppositely charged electrode. Most commonly, the part is mechanically hung and submerged in the electrocoat bath where the electrode resides. The contact between the part and the hanger creates the necessary path for current to flow, but leaves a small touch mark that is not painted and may not be desirable. In "Non-Contact Electrocoating," this touch mark can be eliminated by using conductive liquids to pass charge where a mechanical contact point would otherwise be needed. Instead of trying to hang and submerge a part, the part is supported from underneath and allowed to travel above the electrocoat tank and through a flow cell where electrodepostion takes place. This type of coating process lends itself well for very long parts that are geometrically consistent from end to end and would not be cost effective to process by using conventional electrocoating methods.
