The Mission Synthesis procedure based on the Fatigue Damage Spectrum (FDS) is applied for the qualification testing of (electronic) equipment mounted in racecars. In particular, the components mounted close to the engine (e.g. engine control units) are of interest, as they constantly experience strong engine-induced vibrations. By taking advantage of the fact that these engine-induced vibrations are directly related to the engine speed, it is demonstrated that the FDS can be obtained from engine speed time traces (recorded during races), together with acceleration signals which were previously measured during an engine run-up. In this manner, a total mission FDS (representing e.g. a full race season) can be obtained without requiring instrumentation of accelerometers during the actual races. The efficacy of the procedure is demonstrated using real-life acceleration signals which were measured on an engine control unit close to a V8 engine.
