In the pursuit of downsized, lightweight EV motors with increased power, motor drives with a high voltage of approximately 400 V have become more prevalent. In high voltage drives, the strong voltage between coils, including surge voltage, makes insulation breakdown a concern. Consequently, ensuring the reliability of insulation at high voltages is a key element in EV development. The development of HVs and PHVs also involved high voltages, prompting research into the mechanisms of the partial discharge phenomenon and surge voltage amplification, as well as the development of attendant prediction technologies. The resulting high voltage insulation technologies are expected to also be applicable to EV motors. This paper presents the results of a study on the insulation of high voltage driving motors.
