Low Emission Vehicles Contestable Fund: Supporting Electric Vehicle Innovation in New Zealand-Presented at EVS 31 EVTeC 2018, Kobe, Japan, October 1 - 3, 2018

Electric vehicle (EV) uptake in New Zealand is exceeding the Government's target to double the number of EVs annually to 2021. In June 2017, EVs reached 2% of all light vehicle fleet entrants in New Zealand. There are no purchase price subsidies for EVs in New Zealand. Instead the government's Low Emission Vehicles Contestable Fund provides targeted co-investment towards EV demonstrations, charging infrastructure and innovative projects. This policy approach has delivered cost-effective financial support for EV growth and roll-out of charging infrastructure without creating a market dependent on subsidies. The fund is financed through a levy on petroleum consumption.
