This paper is dedicated to the problem of the oxy-fuel retrofit of an existing pulverized coal-fired boiler of the OP-650 type. The problem of the boiler retrofit has been numerically addressed. Numerical simulations take into consideration a new pulverized coal burner developed which is able to operate in dual-mode conditions and in a wide range of the recycle ratio values keeping appropriate indices of the combustion process. The oxy-fuel boiler operation is tested for different values of the oxygen mole fraction in the range from 25% to 45% in the secondary oxidizer while the constant value of 21% oxygen mole fraction was applied for the primary oxidizer. Finally, the numerical results clearly indicate that the recycle ratio of 73% create combustion conditions that the radiation heat transfer conforms to the standard air combustion conditions.
