With the development of power system, the level of short circuit current is also increasing rapidly. As an effective method to limit short circuit current, fault current limiter (FCL) is more and more widely used. There are many kinds of fault current limiters according to their working principles. Compared with other types of fault current limiters, the fault current limiter based on high coupled split reactor (HCSR) has many advantages. Under normal operation condition, this type of fault current limiter shows very small leakage inductance. When short circuit fault occurs, it will change into current limiting reactor. The capacity of fault current limiter to withstand short-time withstand current and peak withstand current is an important evaluation index, and the reasonable equivalent test method is very important. In this paper, combined with the research of 500 kV and above voltage level AC fault current limiter, the test methods of short-time withstand current and peak withstand current of fault current limiter based on HCSR are comprehensively analyzed, so as to meet the requirements of short-time withstand current and peak withstand current test of fault current limiter based on HCSR.
