This study investigates nitrate and nitrite reduction in a cementitious environment containing hardened cement paste catalysed by biomass from activated sludge and the possible interactions of the cement paste surface with the microorganisms. The nitrate was reduced at pH around of 11.5 whereas the nitrite reduction occurred mainly when pH was maintained below 10.5. The biological activities near or on the cement surface promoted calcite precipitation in association with organic matters oxidation coupled to nitrate reduction. Some of the biomass were anchored to the cement paste surface.
