Identification and Prioritization of Coastal Vulnerability Areas Based on Coastal Vulnerability Indexes (CVI) and Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP)

Inter-disciplinarily study concerning the identification of the highest vulnerability coastal areas has developed various methodologies such as vulnerability indexes, and hazard indexes. Commonly, a number of articles utilized one method for achieving this purpose. This study applied a combination of Coastal Vulnerability Indexes (CVI) and Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) methods for identification and prioritization the most vulnerable coastal in Riau Province, Indonesia (encompassed 900 km of coastlines). This is challenging to combine vulnerability methods in order to enhance better understanding of managing coastal. Based on the CVI method, it was identified that there were 3 coastal would be prioritized as vulnerable as follow; (i) Bantar, Tanjung Motong, Meranti, (ii) Pambang Pesisir, Bengkalis, and (iii) Tanah Merah, P. Rangsang, Meranti. Based on the AHP, the most vulnerable coastal were Pambang Pesisir, Bengkalis, (ii) Tanah Merah, P. Rangsang, Meranti, (iii) Meskom, Bengkalis. The results slightly different as the CVI considered 11 coastal physical variables, and AHP considered more comprehensive criteria encompasses 15 sub-criteria. Based on the AHP the significant criteria was a strategic issue which has been considered as the highest level of influencing criteria for determining the priority for managing the coastal areas.
