Landsat images of USGS as satellite imagery cover almost the entire surface of the earth, including Singkil Swamp Wildlife Reserve (SSWR) area in Aceh. Due to human and natural activities, vegetation conditions, such as vegetation cover density will be change. This study aimed to assess changes in vegetation density or density index (NDVI) at SSWR area, Aceh using Landsat images during period of 1998-2018. Remote sensing (RS) technology and geographic information system (GIS) were used to detect changes NDVI during the period. The result showed that the overall accuracy was 89.8% and kappa accuracy is 87.4% that it means the result can be used in detecting changes in NDVI. In the last 2 decades, the highest dense of vegetation class already decreased from 98.68% (1998) into 37.51% (2018) mostly due to human activities, such as illegal logging and land conversion. Therefore, the quality of SSWR as conservation area during the period was decreasing. Subsequently, the appropriate management and habitat restoration are needed to guarantee the ecosystem functions and services.
