Lessons Learned for FRP an CRM in Harsh Chemical Services

Nonmetallic materials used in industrial plants pertaining to piping and tanks can perform well in a corrosive environment with proper oversight. The design, fabrication, inspection, and maintenance of nonmetallic construction are important key requirements. Furthermore, qualification of materials and testing is necessary to complement the specification and material selection for optimum performance. Conventional FRP (Fiber Reinforced Plastics), rubber linings, and acid brick towers are commonly used with success in these environments. This paper will discuss the use of composite nonmetallic materials commonly used in pulp and paper facilities with the use of acids, caustic, and oxidizers. In addition, the paper will go into case studies and lessons learned from successful projects covering the importance of inspection and quality assurance for reliable service life.
