Vision 2020...Into the Future of Pulp and Paper Mill Sustainability

Rationale: For decades, increased public pressure and stricter government regulations have shaped the pulp and paper industry environmental response. Some pulp and paper companies have set ambitious sustainability goals focused on environmental impact, community engagement and operational safety. Objective: Highlight growing public and investor pressure to achieve net zero emissions and introduce innovative best practices at the mill level to produce short-term results and further embed a culture of environmental stewardship throughout the organization. Methodology and Results: Today mills have realized water and energy reduction and recovery solutions by deploying engineered temporary power and utilities that not only address environmental challenges but also help meet present-day demand, reduce fuel consumption and emissions, increase reliability, and lower operational costs. Case studies reveal the innovative solutions mills are using, and considering, and the results those efforts produce. Conclusions: For the pulp and paper industry, temporary power and utility solutions can help meet future sustainability and profitability goals while managing regulatory, reputational and operational risks today.
