Hydrophobicity of hydrocarbons such as methylene groups has been widely recognized in many research fields. The concepts of hydrophobic hydration and interaction must be considered to describe many processes in the aqueous environment, such as protein folding and the separation and extraction of chemicals. However, is the methylene group always hydrophobic? While it depletes hydration waters in most cases,1-3 here we report a notable exception from results of partial molar volume and Kirkwood-Buff parameter4 of a methylene group.
