We have proposed and developed a new solar-shading transparent film that is retro-reflective to only near-infrared solar radiation. Based on the results of an experimental study, the effectiveness of this newly developed film was investigated from the viewpoint of improving the thermal radiation environment of the surrounding area and mitigating the urban heat island effect. A city block model and weather data were used to quantitatively analyze the influence that various factors, such as the density and height of buildings, the latitude of the city, and the direction of facade, on the amount of solar radiation reflected upward.
