Hofmann's Electrolyser in Laboratory Works

摘要

The Hofmann apparatus for electrolysis of water and its use for three experimental assignments in high schools and colleges are described. The three school assignments include: 1) verification of the laws of electrolysis, 2) calculation of efficiency of the Hofmann apparatus and 3) determination of the elementary charge. These assignments can be completed using one set of experimental results that comprise of electrical current, voltage, time and the volume of the evolved oxygen and hydrogen. Results obtained from the verification of the electrolysis laws and the determination of the elementary charge are only approximate, but sufficient for school laboratory work. An example and calculations are provided.
