Implications of operating conditions in UV light decontamination chambers for items entering swine facilities

Biosecurity to limit the introduction ot novel pathogens is a routine practice. With feed, pigs, supplies, personal items, and people entering and leaving daily, implementation of practices such as decontaminating personal items with UV light is common. Although commercial UV chambers are available, many farms design their own UV chambers for such use. Literature supports the bactericidal effects of UV light, however, validation of the effectiveness of UV light chambers in swine farms is lacking in the literature. The effects ot wavelength and shadowing are currently-undocumented and therefore the practical effectiveness ot UV light decontamination under field conditions for personal item entry is poorly understood.
