In the coming years,significant changes to European legislation will impact European paints and coatings manufacturers.The proposal of the ECHA risk assessment committee(RAC)to lower the specific concentration limit(SCL)for MIT(2-methy!-2H-isothiazol-3-one)from 1000 ppm down to 15 ppm represents a tremendous challenge for the paints & coatings Industry that is expected to become reality by 2019-2020 at the latest.Finished products with concentrations higher than 15 ppm of MIT will have to be labelled with the CLP hazard statement H317”May cause an allergic skin reaction”.As a consequence of this new CLP implementation,paints containing > 15 ppm MIT will no longer be compliant with European ecolabel.Moreover,product containing more than 15 ppm of MIT are expected to get banned for consumer uses toward 2022-23.
