A Microwave Ablation System for the Visualisation and Treatment of Pulmonary Nodules and Tumours

This paper presents a device capable of visualisation deep into the bronchial tree to facilitate the location and subsequent treatment of pulmonary nodules and tumours using microwave ablation at 5.8GHz. A prototype structure was designed, manufactured and tested using a porcine liver bench model and showed repeatable ablation with approximate diameters of larger than 2cm. The integrated vision module is housed within a protective sheath which allows for its retraction during treatment or for replacement with other tools such as biopsy forceps.
