This paper describes a new electrosurgical device with articulating jaws that is capable of delivering 400KHz and 5.8GHz energy for cutting and coagulation of biological tissue respectively. The device has two miniature (4mm length) articulating jaws that form a microwave antenna to deliver energy at 5.8GHz and two apposing poles that form a bipolar structure to deliver energy at 400KHz. The device overcomes challenges associated with voltage breakdown when delivering 400KHz energy with a peak voltage of up to 350V for cutting and antenna to tissue impedance match when delivering 5.8GHz energy to produce dielectric heating. This paper gives details of electromagnetic field simulations and in-vitro data, together with initial histology for the optimized device structure.
