Change dynamics of agroforestry natural resource in Bangladesh using Landsat and MODIS data

The temporal change of agroforestry natural resource is investigated in terms of land cover using satellite-based information over Bangladesh. The district of Gazipur has been selected to assess the rapid change over time due to its rapid development in settlement, industry areas and other infrastructure advancement, since Gazipur is in the northeastern neighborhood of Dhaka, the capital of the nation. Satellite images of Landsat 4-5 TM (2005, 2009) and Landsat 7 ETM+ (2001) are analyzed utilizing the information from bands 1-5 and 7. Homestead is a category of agroforestry that can play an important role for the efficient land use towards sustainable development. From 2001 to 2009, the homestead coverage slightly increased (55% to 57%), while paddy area increased from 30% to 37% and the urban coverage increased from 1% to 3%. On the contrary, forest area decreased considerably, from 14% to 3%. Also we tested the applicability of more coarse but frequent looking MODIS data for the land cover analysis. Using the near cloud-free 8-day composite data (MOD09Q1), temporal variation of normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) is assessed to obtain the phenological information.
