Solubility measurement of ferulic acid in supercritical carbon dioxide-water two phase system

Ferulic acid (FA) is one of phenolic compound that can be found in some vegetables, cereals, and fruits. This compound serves as antioxidant, anti-diabetic, anti-cancer, and anti-aging agents. Hence, the usages of FA have been mostly applied in food, pharmaceutical, and cosmetic industries. Supercritical carbon dioxide (ScCO2) is an interesting solvent which is being widely utilized in extraction of organic compounds from plant materials and purification of organic compounds from liquid solutions. For these reasons, knowledge on the solutes solubility in ScCO2 single-phase and ScCO2-water two-phase system is momentous for employing ScCO2 to separate or purify the organic solutes. Solubility of FA in ScCO2 was already measured at different pressures and temperatures of ScCO2 [1, 2]. However, solubility measurement of FA in ScCO2-water system has not been studied yet. In the two-phase mixture measurement, partition coefficient is used to express the separation performance of a solute between ScCO2 and water phases. The partition coefficient is accordingly dependent on its solubility in ScCO2 phase relating to the changes of pressure and temperature of ScCO2 [3]. In this work, the FA solubi l i ty data in ScCO2 and water phases as well as its partition coefficient at different pressure and temperature were reported.
