Hordenine (4-(2-dimethylaminoethyl)), a kind of phenethylamine alkaloid, is widely distributed in aconitum, seaweeds, orange, barley and beer. Hordenine has been attracting great attention since this molecule exhibits multiple pharmacological activities, such as antioxidant, antibacterial, and antibiotic. Furthermore, hordenine demonstrates an ability to inhibit melanogenesis in human melanocytes1 . However, overdose of hordenine will result in severe side effects unavoidably. Therefore, developing a highly sensitive method for the determination of hordenine would be valuable and meaningful. In this work, a novel and facile method for fabrication of sensitive electrochemical sensor to detect hordenine was proposed based on a graphene-like material of boron phosphide (BP) particles modified carbon paste electrode (CPE). The electrode was applied to improve quantitative analysis of hordenine, and the detection linear range and limit of hordenine on the prepared electrode were found to be superior to the reported ways. The electrochemical behaviors and redox mechanism of hordenine over the prepared sensor were also investigated.
