Reductive cleavage of carbon-oxygen bonds in aryl ethers plays a key role in organic synthesis. For example, reductive deoxygenation enables the use of an ether moiety to serve as a removable activating and directing group in arene carbon-hydrogen functionalization reactions. Although several catalysts for reduction reactions of aryl ethers have been reported, all such reactions is only applicable to polycyclic aryl ethers such as naphthyl and biphenyl ethers, and monocyclic aryl ethers such as anisole are much less reactive.1
