AMPA-type glutamate receptors (AMPARs) are a subtype of the ionotropic glutamate receptors, which mediate fast excitatory neurotransmission in the central nervous system. Developmentally and activity-regulated changes of the number of AMPARs at the postsynaptic membrane are essential for excitatory synapse formation, synaptic plasticity and neural circuit formation. Recent reports have also proposed that repetitive endocytosis and recycling of AMPARs occur in a short period for controlling synaptic functions. Therefore, analyzing the dynamics of AMPAR is indispensable for elucidation of the mechanism of memory, learning and neurological diseases.
