Ultrathin polymer films have received attention for a long time because of their unique properties. Recently, we have demonstrated a methodology to regulate the primary structure and the morphology of vinyl polymers using the nanochannels of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs).1,2 In this study, we performed free-radical crosslinking polymerization of methyl methacrylate (MMA) and styrene (St) in the pore of [Ni(Hbtc)(bpy)]n (1; btc = 1,3,5-benzenetricarboxylate, bpy = 4,4'-bipyridine),3 which has pillared layer structure, to synthesize ultrathin films with subnanometer thickness.
