An allylamine unit, which is a ubiquitous structural motif of biologically active compounds and functional materials, is recognized as a versatile building block in both industry and academia. Practical catalytic approaches to allylamine derivatives, e.g. the aza-Morita–Baylis–Hillman reaction and a cross-coupling of imines with alkenes, have therefore been developed. A palladium-catalyzed oxidative carbon–nitrogen bond-forming reaction, referred to as the aza-Wacker-type reaction, is also one of the most straightforward synthetic methods. However, no successful examples of the intermolecular aza-Wacker-type reaction leading to branched allylamines have been reported.
