H2 is a promising alternative energy source because of its high gravimetric energy density and an environmentally-friendly combustion by-product. However, long-term liquid H2 storage has difficulties related to “a boil-off problem” caused by nuclear spin conversion between the nuclear spin isomers, i.e. ortho-H2 (o-H2) and para-H2 (p-H2), where ortho-para (o-p) conversion is a spin-forbidden and exothermic process.
