Low Insertion Force Compliant Pin Connector Assembly Challenge and Solution

Compliant pin connectors have been widely used for interconnection of server systems. With the increase of component density and functional complexity on printed circuit board assemblies (PCBA), compliant pin/press-fit connectors are progressing to fewer pins, which are themselves reduced in size. This leads to a lower insertion force in the actual production process. A more accurate and sensitive pressure sensor/load cell is needed to accurately measure the smaller force. The existing press-fit equipment, designed for connectors with a large number of pins and high insertion forces, will not be accurate and sensitive enough in the application of these new compliant pin connectors. The challenges and solutions presented in this paper on the application of such compliant pin connectors takes the capability of the press attachment, measurement system analysis (MSA)1 review to improve process quality control and connector design into consideration.
