System Operation in Novel Power Grids - A Central Topic in Germans Biggest Research Initiative for the 'Energiewende'

In the context of Energiewende one of the biggest German research initiatives has been launched, namely the Kopernikus projects. Within Kopernikus, the ENSURE project (New ENergy grid StructURes for the German Energiewende) pursue a holistic systemic approach in cooperation with over 20 industrial and research partners with the aim to provide and analyze new energy network structures from energy generation to energy consumption. Changed framework conditions require adjustments to the electrical power supply, but also the coupling of different energy carriers, e.g. coupling of electricity, gas, heat and traffic sector. Therefore, a comprehensive study has to be carried out with the consideration of technical, economical, social and ecological aspects. One of the main research topics is the system operation of these novel network structures. In this article the project structure, methodology and study framework will be described.
