Trends oiLawsonia intracellularis polymerase chain reaction submissions at the University of Minnesota Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory over a 10-year period

Lawsonia intracellularis, an obligatory intracellular gram negative bacterium, is the etiological agent of porcine proliferative enteropathy (PPE). PPE is endemic in the United States swine herd, though no recent national/regional incidence estimatesare available. Therefore, it is difficult to assess its impact and evaluate whether changes in management (such as the upcoming January 2017 ban on the use of growth promoters) may influence its distribution. The objective of this study was to determinewhether patterns could be detected in diagnostic submissions in order to guide future diagnostic sampling strategies.
