RIVER MANAGEMENT AND ECOSYSTEM CONSERVATION IN CHINA

China is endowed with about 50,000 rivers. River management constitutes the principle part of water resources management in the country. In the past five decades, China has made great efforts in river management and gained remarkable achievements. There are, however, many problems to be studied and solved, especially the negative impacts of large-sized projects on the ecosystem. Therefore, it is necessary to change from the project-based river management to resource-oriented river management, with an emphasis on preserving and improving the ecosystem. A new philosophy for river management in a sustainable manner and the relevant practice in China are discussed in this paper.
