The paper investigates the characteristics of runoff and sediment yield from purple soil on sloping land under different rainfall intensities. The results showed that for the same duration of rainfall, runoff increased with increasing rainfall intensity. Rainfall runoff increased greatly when rainfall intensity increased from 30 to 90 mm/h, but increased relatively slowly when rainfall intensity rose from 90 to 120 mm/h. Increased rainfall intensity also led to an increase in both the rate of slope erosion and the rate of slope erosion growth. Under different slope conditions, the relationship between runoff volume and rain intensity as well as the relation between sediment yield and rain intensity could be expressed as power functions. Within the confidence interval, the correlations were reliable as the confidence coefficients were greater than 0.97.
