The certification authorities through CS25.1316 - system lightning protection - require for systems involved in a Catastrophic Failure Condition (FC) that "each electrical and electronic system that performs these functions must be designed and installed to ensure that the operation and operational capabilities of the systems to perform these functions are not adversely affected when the aeroplane is exposed to lightning". To comply with this requirement a strategy is laid out, consisting of functional system tests on partial system (at supplier's facility) or aircraft system integrated benches as well as taking into account individual equipment qualification when relevant. Lightning and HIRF functional system test strategy has evolved through Airbus recent aircraft developments (A340-5/6, A380, A400M and A350XWB) in order to optimize the verification of system under LIE/HIRF environment taking into account time and technical constraints. The approach is broken down into: 1. Identification of the electrical and electronic system involved in critical functions, 2. Analysis of their complexity and operations to determine the means of verification (individual equipment qualification, system test on integrated benches, aircraft tests), 3. Priority setting, 4. Definition of enveloping operational modes and related pass/fail criteria, 5. Application of an optimised test method. The latest EMH functional system tests strategy is presented in this paper along with the results and findings of the test campaign. The main influencing factors are depicted as a worked example of a system test assessment.
