The lightning accident of Mi-26 is studied in the article. The direct effect of the lightning was that the trailing edge of the tail rotor and the glass fibre reinforced plastic pipe girder were detached by the shearing force and centrifugal force, which made the hammer brace unbalanced with a physical tearing of about 1m as the secondary damage. The very high frequency (VHF) signal generator, Cockpit Voice Recorders (CVR)/Flight Data Recorders (FDR) and the set of radio altimeter were damaged. The aircraft crashed after losing its flight ability. The investigations showed that when composite structure was struck by lightning, structure failure and damage of large surface was the consequence. Typical lightning protections can be adding wire and wire netting to the surface of structures, which has possibility of direct lightning attachment.
