The already huge amount of data associated with web services and the omics investigations, continue to increase with a vary fast rate. This poses a real challenge to scientists concerned with the design of effective numerical and computational tools to process, represent and analyze the information available in these massive data sets. The ability to extract relevant information from large volumes of data is expected to lead to significant advances in science and engineering, with the potential of improving the quality of life. Today's data mining and processing are interdisciplinary research areas in which applied mathematics has a pivotal role, and is expected to provide the necessary expertise for the design of numerical, computational, statistical and modeling tools tailored to answer relevant questions of interest in specific in problems. Meeting this challenge may require applied mathematicians to revisit well solution methods, or to design from scratch new approaches especially devised for the problems at hand. The papers presented at the NUMTA 2016 session on Numerical and Computational Methods in Data Analysis and Classification exemplify well how different numerical and computational methods enter the data processing in real life problems, and how classical numerical methods can take on a new interpretation in the light of their possible use in data analysis applications.
