Mass spectrometry is the primary method for the analysis of environmental safeguards samples collected by IAEA inspectors for the verification of facility treaty compliance and adherence to declared activities. Typically swipes are analyzed for total uranium and plutonium content and isotopic composition. This information is then reported to the IAEA, where their evaluators assess the data and determine if the resulting radionuclide signatures are consistent with declared activities at the monitored facility.
