PEDV antibody responses in fecal and oral fluid specimens

The management of PEDV will depend upon the development of PEDV antibody assays able to detect infected animals and assess their level of protective (lactogenic) immunity. In an intestinal infection such as PEDV, the crucial confrontation of the pathogen with antibodies occurs within the environment of the gut lumen; thus, serum antibody levels are only an indirect reflection of the immune response against PEDV within the gut. On the other hand, fecal antibodies, as a mirror of mucosal immunity, could be an effective tool both in surveillance and for the prognostic assessment of immunity against PEDV.
