Laminitis, is not a 'modern' condition; it has been recognised for well over 2000 years. Aristotle even referred to it around 350 BC as 'Barley Disease' presumably because it was associated even then with excessive consumption of grain. However, recently there appears to have been an increased recognition of the importance of pasture-associated laminitis (PAL) and similarly, whilst an obese horse is not a new phenomenon, the number of obese animals especially within the pleasure/leisure arena appears to be increasing and it is becoming a globally recognised important welfare issue.
