Diseases Caused by Canine Herpes Virus

Canine herpes virus (Canid herpes virus, CaHV-1) is a member of Family Herpesviridae, subfamily Alphaherpesvirinae. CaHV-1 has world-wide distribution. CaHV-1 serological incidence varies in different countries of the world (40-93%). In Scandinavia, about 86% seropositivity has been reported in unvaccinated bitches. CaHV-1 host range is canids (dogs, wolves and coyote). CaHV-1 does not infect humans. CaHV-1 is monotypic and, is genetically closely related to feline herpes virus. CaHV-1 isolates fromdifferent parts of the world cannot be distinguished genetically because of high homology. Because CaHV-1 is poorly immunogenic, the diagnosis can be missed based on serology alone. Latently infected dogs can convert to seronegative status.
